Shared Economy Start Up Eyes Manitoba Wedding Industry

Winnipeg, MB: January 14, 2016 – With the growing rise of the sharing economy seen in everything from wedding dress rentals to ride shares, one Winnipeg-based company is looking to bring the power of collective purchasing to Manitoba’s wedding industry.

Pop-Up Weddings Manitoba © is the brainchild of local wedding and event planner Michelle Boivin, who says that changing lifestyles and demographics are tempering romance with pragmatism, and leading couples to seek out sustainable alternatives to hyper-consumerism. Enter Pop Up Weddings – whose services are built around the concept of time and resource sharing of big-ticket wedding day expenses such as venue rental, photography, wedding coordinator, décor and styling.

“Basically, we streamline the wedding experience and cut costs simply by sharing the big day with other couples,” stated Boivin. “For example,” she continued, “Our Valentine’s Day Elopement Package is sold out with five couples ready to tie the knot.”

Here’s how it works:

For their popular Elopement Ceremony Packages, Pop Up Weddings pre-selects the date and venue, arranges styling and decor, onsite photographer, bridal floral and marriage commissioner and splits the cost amongst five (5) participating couples.

Couples still get a private and memorable ceremony, but at a significantly reduced price (with Elopement Ceremony Packages starting at just $2500.00).

In addition to Elopement Packages, Boivin says her company also offers Ceremony and After-Party Reception Packages (featuring cocktail receptions with custom menu creation) versus the traditional sit down chicken dinner. For couples that still want some of the trappings of a larger wedding, Pop Up Weddings is happy to provide custom planning and a variety of specialty a la carte services.

“The sharing economy is a real trend that continues to grow and flourish,” added Boivin. “The world has changed, and we are seeing is a marked shift in the way people think and consume – with the concept of thoughtful or collaborative consumption growing in acceptance and popularity as more and more couples question the need to go into long term debt for a one day event.”

“We think Pop-Up Weddings is a better way to wed,” Boivin concluded. “In fact, we’ve made that our theme line!”
